Towards Real-time Simulation of Hyperelastic Materials

چکیده
We present a new method for real-time physics-based simulation supporting many different types of hyperelastic materials. Previous methods such as Position Based or Projective Dynamics are fast, but support only limited selection of materials; even classical materials such as the Neo-Hookean elasticity are not supported. Recently, Xu et al. [2015] introduced new “spline-based materials” which can be easily controlled by artists to achieve desired animation effects. Simulation of these types of materials currently relies on Newton’s method, which is slow, even with only one iteration per timestep. In this paper, we show that Projective Dynamics can be interpreted as a quasi-Newton method. This insight enables very efficient simulation of a large class of hyperelastic materials, including the Neo-Hookean, spline-based materials, and others. The quasi-Newton interpretation also allows us to leverage ideas from numerical optimization. In particular, we show that our solver can be further accelerated using L-BFGS updates (Limitedmemory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno algorithm). Our final method is typically more than 10 times faster than one iteration of Newton’s method without compromising quality. In fact, our result is often more accurate than the result obtained with one iteration of Newton’s method. Our method is also easier to implement, implying reduced software development costs.

Understanding and modeling liver biomechanics represents a significant challenge due to its complex nature. In this paper, we tackle this issue in the context of real-time surgery simulation where a compromise between biomechanical accuracy and computational efficiency must be found. We describe a realistic liver model including hyperelasticity, porosity and viscosity that is implemented within...
متن کاملModelling Anisotropic, Hyperelastic Materials in ABAQUS
ABAQUS offers the possibility to model non-linear isotropic materials as well as linear anisotropic materials. However, it is not possible to use these two capabilities at the same time in order to model anisotropic hyperelastic materials. Gurvich proposed to model such materials by means of the linear superposition of two fictitious materials: a linear anisotropic, and a hyperelastic isotropic...

In this work, we consider fluid-structure interaction simulation with nonlinear hyperelastic models in the solid part. We use a partitioned approach to deal with the coupled nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problems. We focus on handling the nonlinearity of the fluid and structure sub-problems, the nearincompressibility of materials, the stabilization of employed finite element discretizat...
متن کاملOn Stress Anlysis for a Hyperelastic Material
Performing a finite element analysis (FEA) on a hyperelastic material is difficult due to nonlinearity, large deformation, and material instability. This paper provides a brief review of the hyperelastic theory and discusses several important issues that should be addressed when using ANSYS. Analysis on a fatigue specimen is used as an example of one of our product development challenges upon w...
متن کاملPOD for Real-Time Simulation of Hyperelastic Soft Biological Tissue Using the Point Collocation Method of Finite Spheres
The point collocation method of finite spheres (PCMFS) is used to model the hyperelastic response of soft biological tissue in real time within the framework of virtual surgery simulation. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) model order reduction (MOR) technique was used to achieve reduced-order model of the problem, minimizing computational cost. The PCMFS is a physics-based meshfree num...
